Saturday 15th January 2011 100th Anniversary Celebration of AGBU London
The year 2010 hallmarked the 100th anniversary of AGBU London chapter. Throughout the year a number of events were organised to celebrate the long standing organisational values and traditions of this chapter. The culminating celebration of the centenary, however, was held on New Year’s Eve – the 31 January 2010. This exceptional event gathered distinguished guests, AGBU members and friends to celebrate organisational achievements on a grand scale – a sumptuous gala dinner and dance night.
Among the honorary guests of AGBU London attending the event were the Very Reverend Father Vahan Hovhanessian, who conveyed the blessing (‘Gontag’) of His Holiness KAREKIN II addressed to AGBU and the local community. The Reverend Father Shnork Baghdassarian, representatives of the Armenian Embassy in London, the chairmen of the preceding Executive Committees and other distinguished guests honoured everyone with their presence.
The centenary celebration generated an unprecedented interest in the community and gathered around 300 AGBU members and friends. To create a festive atmosphere to match the occasion, AGBU London invited a well-known Armenian singer and song-writer Christine Pepelyan and an omnipotent master of ceremonies Arsen Grigoryan. They charmed, amused and entertained the audience enjoying the evening that took them into 2011. The most-loved songs of Christine Pepelyan comforted, touched and delighted the participants.
The Executive Committee of AGBU London, who put a considerable amount of time and effort in organising the event, had also prepared a few pleasant surprises. Some of the lucky participants won exciting prizes such as: a Eurostar ticket-voucher, a digital camera, a digital reader, a signed book of paintings by Ayvazovsky and many other carefully selected items. The participants have also been given a branded bag and a brochure specifically prepared to mark the occasion. They also received a short-film DVD, featuring a historic account about the Armenian General Benevolent Union.
The ceremonial cutting of the anniversary cake drew to a close only the official part of the celebration. Participants continued the festivity – dancing the 2010 away and cheering for a Happy New Year ahead. This successful start into the New Year and a New Era for AGBU London will hopefully lead the organisation and the community towards celebrating many more other and not less significant anniversaries.
