Public Lecture by the Chairman of AGBU Europe Mr. Alexis Govciyan.
A presentation by Mr. Alexis Govciyan Chairman of AGBU Europe May 28, 2008, 7:30 PM Armenian House, 25 Cheniston Gardens, London, W8 6TG Admission is Free
The Bulgarian cities of Stara Zagora, Burgas and Plovdiv have just approved a resolution recognizing the Armenian genocide, with Sofia well on its way. Armenians from Bulgaria adopted the same city-by-city strategy that eventually led to France’s official recognition in 2001.
Alexis Govciyan, one of the key architects of the French process, was recently nominated Chairman of AGBU Europe.
During this presentation, Alexis Govciyan will discuss the importance of working on this issue and other important challenges at the European level. He will outline the many areas where the Armenian diaspora and its main organizations can be effective at home and in Brussels on areas regarding culture, education, regional conflict, economic blockade and more generally the support of the Armenian state.
A former student of Essayan and Mekhitaryan schools of Istanbul, Mr. Govciyan was appointed president of AGBU Europe on January 1, 2008. Director of the Institut Supérieur des Metiers (France), he is currently a board member of the National Fund for Promoting and Communicating on Crafts. Mr. Govciyan is president of the Coordination Council of Armenian Organizations of France (CCAF) and “Europe de la Memoire”. He has actively contributed to the vote of the law on the recognition of the Armenian genocide by France. Mr. Govciyan is also vice-president of the “Association Arménienne d’Aide Soial (AAAS)” and a member of the religious association of the Armenian Apostolic Church. Mr. Govciyan was awarded the “Legion of Honour”, the “National Order of Merit” and the “Palmes Académiques” medals. He is the author of the book entitled "April 24: testimony on the recognition by France of the 1915 Armenian genocide, published by “Editions Cherche Midi in 2003".
